The Zapple app icon just sits there on the phone screen, a weird little thing that looks like it was drawn in MS Paint by someone who gave up halfway. And that's kind of the whole vibe, right? The game doesn't try to be slick. The 2D art has this rough, almost unfinished quality, like sketches that got scanned in a hurry. Some of the lingerie sets look genuinely hot in that messy way, but then a character's face will be slightly off and you're just staring at it wondering if the artist's hand slipped. Sebastien, the guy you play, has this power to mess with people's heads through the app, changing how they see things. The text is where it actually gets interesting. The dialogue has this blunt, dirty rhythm to it. Someone's telling you something normal and then bam, the conversation takes a turn and you're reading a line that made me actually snort out loud. Not always in a good way. Sometimes it's trying so hard to be edgy that it circles back to being funny.
The interface though. Oh man. As someone who needs things to be readable, the text boxes are a nightmare. Tiny font, weird contrast choices, buttons that blend into the background. There's this one menu where the options are literally light grey on white. Who does that? I spent way too long just trying to find the button to progress a scene. The pictures, when they pop up, are the reward I guess. Some of the hentai scenes are surprisingly detailed considering the rest looks like a rough draft. One moment you're squinting at a character portrait that looks like a DeviantArt upload from 2004, the next there's a full spread image that's actually composed well. The dating mechanics are barebones, mostly just clicking through text trees, but the mind control angle lets you skip the boring small talk and get straight to the weird stuff.
There's this one scene early on where you use Zapple on a date and the way the text describes her expression changing, that blank look, it's creepier than most horror games manage. Then the picture loads and it's just... okay. The disconnect between the writing and the visuals is wild. Version 0.62, so more coming apparently. The whole thing feels like finding someone's private project folder, complete with the jank and the occasional moment that makes you go "huh, not bad." Dare to play it alone, or invite company?
