the thing about Past Tense is that it understands how a look can do more work than a sex scene. there's this moment early on where the milf neighbor, someone from the protagonist's childhood, just leans against the doorframe while he's unpacking boxes. she doesn't say anything wild, just small talk about how the neighborhood changed, but her posture is doing this whole other conversation. one hand on her hip, the fabric of her dress pulling just enough. you know exactly what's happening in her head because the 3dcg renders, as unpolished as they are, nail that specific tension. the slightly too-long pause before she laughs at her own joke. the way her eyes flick down and back up. i've stared at that render for an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out if the dev meant for her wedding ring to catch the light like that or if it's just a happy accident with the lighting engine. probably both.

the protagonist is a virgin which in most games means a blank slate for the player to project onto but here it actually matters to the story. he's back in this old neighborhood after some vague failure, the kind you don't want to explain to people who knew you before. and the women, there are a few but it's not a harem thing, thank god, they all have their own shit going on. the milf character specifically, she's not just waiting around to fuck the younger guy. she's got this whole history with his family that the game drip feeds through these really uncomfortable conversations where you have to choose between digging deeper or letting it go. i picked the wrong dialogue option once and she just shut down completely. closed off. the romance path with her requires you to be patient in a way that feels almost cruel given how the renders keep framing her ass in those tight skirts. the game knows what it's doing.

the teasing is relentless but in this very grounded way. not the anime trope of accidental boob grabs. more like, she'll ask you to fix something under the sink and then stand right there, close enough that you can smell her perfume, and make some comment about how strong you've gotten. the big tits and big ass are rendered with this almost uncomfortable realism, like someone who actually looked at reference photos instead of just inflating sliders in daz3d. there's a scene where she's sitting on the couch and the way her thighs spread against the cushion, the weight of it, i don't know. it stuck with me. the romance path is slow but when it finally pays off, the explicit content hits different because you've been marinating in all this unspoken history. the past tense of the title isn't just grammar, it's the whole mood. everyone's haunted by versions of themselves that don't exist anymore. i wish the ui wasn't so clunky though. the text box covers the bottom third of some really good renders and there's no way to hide it completely. small thing but it bugs me every time.
