Thalna lives underground. Not metaphorically. She literally spends her days in this grimy underworld where everyone wants a piece of her, and not in the sweet way. The whole thing feels deliberately rough around the edges, like someone drew it on a napkin then scanned it. That works for the setting actually. You get this sense of grime and bad decisions clinging to every corner.

The tattoo thing threw me off at first. You don't see many adult games fixating on body modification as a corruption marker, but here we are. Every time Thalna gets inked, it's like watching someone sign away another piece of their soul. The art during these scenes is surprisingly intimate for something so deliberately ugly. Not ugly in a bad way, ugly in a "this is the underworld and it should feel uncomfortable" way. The CG hentai scenes hit different when you know they're coming because of a choice you made three screens back. There's this one moment where she's getting marked up and the artist asks if she's sure. I clicked yes. She wasn't sure. Neither was I. The game doesn't care. It just keeps going, showing you the consequences with this flat affect that somehow makes everything more disturbing. I wish the dialogue had more bite to it sometimes, but the visual novel format means you're mostly just clicking through. That's fine. I've spent too much time on itch.io anyway.

What gets me is how the game remembers. Not in some fancy branching narrative way, but in this stubborn refusal to let you take back the moments where you pushed Thalna toward something awful. She changes. You see it in the CGs, in the way she carries herself. The underground stops being a place she's stuck in and starts being somewhere she belongs. That's the corruption working. Or maybe that's just what happens when you spend enough time somewhere. I keep thinking about whether any of these choices actually matter or if we're all just watching someone slide down a hill that was always going to be slippery. The game doesn't answer that question. I don't think it wants to.
