The jingle bells are still faintly ringing somewhere in the back of my skull, that post holiday haze where everything feels a bit too bright, a bit too loud. And here’s this thing, Neruhado, a bonus novel, like finding a crumpled candy wrapper under the couch from last year’s festivities. It’s a collection of scenes, the best hits from something called Neru Hard episodes, all centered on a character named Maria. The animation style is what it is, deliberately unpolished, like a snow globe shaken by a toddler, everything a little off kilter.
The first scene just throws you in. No warm up, no mistletoe. Just Maria and a toy, a bright pink thing that buzzes with a sound like an angry wasp trapped in tinsel. The way her back arches, the animators didn’t bother smoothing out the keyframes, so it’s this jerky, desperate motion that’s somehow more effective than anything slick. There’s a roughness to the whole thing, a hard sex tag that isn’t lying. It’s not brutal, but it’s… insistent. A scene later, on a desk maybe, the perspective is all wrong, her leg clips through the furniture, and for a split second you see the flat texture of the wood inside her thigh. It’s a mistake that pulls you out, but then the sound design, a wet, rhythmic slap, pulls you right back in. The game doesn’t care about the clipping. Neither does Maria.
The whole thing feels like a series of disconnected, sweaty dioramas. The sexy tag is applied with a trowel, but it’s a specific kind of sexy, the kind where the character’s expression cycles through the same three frames of pained ecstasy on a loop. The rough sex isn’t about power dynamics, it’s about the physicality of it, the impact. I kept waiting for a narrative thread, some ghost of Christmas past to explain why we’re here, but no. It’s just these fragments. The lack of polish is the whole point, I think. Or maybe it’s just a lack of polish. Hard to say. The therapist in me wonders about Maria’s fixation, but the rest of me is just watching the way the fabric of her skirt, a cheap looking red thing, tears in the third sequence. The sound effect for it is surprisingly crisp.
