The demo build crashes if you pick the third dialogue option in the tavern scene. Not a soft lock, full freeze. I reloaded, picked something else, and the game just... moved on like nothing happened. That's the whole vibe here. Marble Syrup's weirdest project yet, a fantasy visual novel that's half finished but somehow more interesting than most complete ones on the shelf.
The plot starts with your standard chosen one bullshit, but then it takes a hard left into body horror territory around the thirty minute mark. There's a scene with a cursed amulet that made me genuinely uncomfortable, and I've seen some shit. The writing is rough, like first draft rough, with typos and weird phrasing that sometimes works in its favor. Feels like reading someone's unhinged D&D campaign notes. The choices actually matter in ways I didn't expect, though. One early decision about whether to help a wounded goblin changes which sex scenes you unlock later, and not in the obvious way.
Speaking of sex scenes, the ones that are implemented are... ambitious. The art style shifts between scenes, some look like polished anime stills, others like rough sketches. There's a tentacle sequence that's more funny than hot because the anatomy makes no sense. The game knows it's a beta, there's placeholder text everywhere, some buttons do nothing. But the core loop of reading, choosing, and watching the consequences unfold kept me clicking.
The patreon stuff is shoved in your face constantly, which gets old fast. Every few scenes there's a reminder about the HD version with cheats. Like, I get it, you need money, but let me enjoy my weird fantasy smut in peace. The music loops are short and grating after a while, I ended up muting it.
There's a scene where you can betray your party member for a power boost, and the game doesn't judge you for it. That's rare. Most VNs moralize, this one just lets you be a piece of shit and moves on. The writing has this deadpan quality that makes the absurd moments land harder. I laughed out loud at a line about "the economics of dungeon looting" that I won't spoil here.
Not finished, probably never will be finished, but the demo has enough weird charm to justify the download. Just don't pick that third option in the tavern. Or do, if you like staring at a frozen screen wondering what could have been.
