It isn't easy to climb to the most elite of societies but there is no guarantee that you'll meet angels. However the tale of their lives isn't just about them. The level drain mechanic in Fragment Tower is the kind of thing that makes you actually nervous during combat. Not fake nervous like when a game tells you the world is ending. Real nervous, because you just spent twenty minutes grinding those three levels and now some slime girl with too many tentacles is about to suck them right out of your character. The corruption system runs parallel to this, a separate track where losing yourself to the tower's influence unlocks scenes but also makes future fights harder because your stats get weird and unreliable.

I got stuck on floor seven for way too long. There's this enemy, a corrupted knight type, who has a grab attack that triggers a pretty explicit scene where she drains two levels at once while the text describes exactly what she's doing with her armor's... modifications. The writing doesn't dance around it. When the game says corruption, it means the kind that leaves your character panting and the player reaching for a towel. The tower setting keeps everything claustrophobic, each floor a new encounter with something that wants to either kill you or fuck you, usually both in that order. Queen Isla at the top is the whole point but honestly the journey is where the good stuff lives.

The RPG elements are basic. Like, really basic. Attack, defend, maybe a skill if you haven't been drained into uselessness. But that simplicity works because the real game is resource management of your own levels and how much corruption you're willing to tolerate before a boss fight. I wish the corruption scenes had more variety in the mid game, they start repeating around floor five and it takes some of the tension out of giving in. The visual novel segments between floors are where most of the story lives, and the art during those parts is cleaner than the combat sprites, which look like they were drawn by someone who was very distracted. Not complaining. Just noticing. The seduction tag isn't just flavor text, there are dialogue choices that can lead to scenes without combat, but you lose levels either way. That's the whole point really. Everything costs something.
